Gigi Smith is a Grade 11 student at KSS who has been selected to be December’s Kondor of the month. She was nominated for volunteering at the local fire hall. She took the initiative to volunteer in late October and has been going to the hall once a week since then. Over the course of a year, she will be working towards getting her Level 1 firefighting certificate. The training for Level 1 firefighters includes mainly hands-on skills but towards the end of the course, they will be able to respond to calls as a recruit. Gigi says, “I haven’t put any fires out, as I haven’t gotten that far in my training yet.”
Gigi reports that she’s had a very positive experience with volunteering, “I’ve really enjoyed my first few weeks at the hall!” She recalls having an interest in fire fighting since a young age. Her interest sparked due to her Uncle working as an interior firefighter when she was a kid. When asked if she plans to pursue a career in emergency services, she responded, “I’ve for sure considered a career in the fire service, I just want to see where life takes me.” Gigi says working in a fire hall is “No walk in the park. You really have to devote your time to it.”, however, she says it’s worth it if you are serious and committed. Gigi recommends other students join their local fire department if it’s something of interest to them. Volunteering at a fire hall is a great way to serve your community and learn some really valuable, possibly life-saving skills. While firefighting is no easy feat it’s really rewarding and “you get to meet and help some really great people.”
Kondor of the Month is selected for excellence and diligence. Two things that Gigi has demonstrated through her work at the fire hall.
